Leather masks have been in existence since centuries especially during the war of Roman and Greek empires. They were used to hide faces and protect from scratches and serious wounds that could deform the face. In the contemporary time these masks are worn in carnivals, functions, events, Halloween, parties, dramas and a lot more. These masks formed a craze within people when portrayed in movies like Leather face, Batman and Robin, Daredevil, Friday the 13th etc. they became famous among children and adults. Many Halloween leather masks have grotesque imprints of deformed werewolf, animal images and vampires. There are thousands of designs which fill the market during this period and kids take a joyful interest in selecting their desired one. In carnivals, leather masks are worn by people as they dance along on the streets and floats. These masks come in many vibrant colors and mixed in hues of pastels. The cat faced mask is the most famous and is varied in slit eyehole to the full covered face masks. Some of them strap around the head while others are worn over till neck, enclosing the full head and face. These masks are capered and fringed to make them look classier. Fashion shows have models wearing leather masks that coat the eye area and have an aura of mysticism. There was an onset of trend wherein people used to go for blind dates in these masks! Grand operas have people striding up in leather masks and this gives a somber and adventurous look to them. These masks come in studded pattern and many rip designs which can plaster on your face in full length or just a part of it. Leather masks are also an essential part in many professions. Many drillers and forest fellers wear these masks for protection. Earlier scuba masks were also made of leather and are still made from them. Rawhide from cows, goat, sheep, buffaloes, ostrich, lamb, calf, deer etc are used in producing these masks. These masks can be even made at home if you don’t want to buy one and use your creativity. Just get a thin layer of leather recommended for mask making of a certain length from a store. Buy frames for sketching. Wet the leather and place it over the frame. Indent the leather by fuming and let it dry and take it off when it is ready. If you want to make one of your designs, you have to sketch out the image on the leather and cut it out. Sew the edges properly with a help of a sewing machine and your mask is ready! So get out of the box leather masks from shop or make one of your own!
