Handle with care for sustainability Leather jackets

Leather jackets are unique from other clothing materials due to its style and longevity. A high-quality leather jacket tends to be more long lasting than cheaper leather. With the right care and proper maintenance, leather jackets can last for number of years. To keep the leather jacket clean, there are a few special steps that will ensure it stays durable. Leather jackets are sustainable only if they are handled with proper care because unprotected leather is susceptible to spotting from water and other liquids. A newly purchased leather item should be treated immediately to prevent permanent stains. The use of too much oil and wax, however, can clog pores, causing leather to lose its ability to allow air in and moisture out. The first thing you need to do is to read the manufacturer’s instructions given about how to care for your leather jacket. Look for the care label located inside your garment and then follow the care instructions. Always hang leather coats on wide padded hangers. Do not store jackets in plastic bags or other nonporous covers rather keep it open for ventilation so that wet or damp leather gets dried away naturally from any source of heat. In winter, remove any salt deposits from coats by using a wet sponge. To prevent mildew, protect leather from excessive humidity. In a dry environment, regularly condition the leather in order to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Do not use waxes, or silicone formulas or other leather preparations that impair the ability of the leather to “breathe”. Never use any type of household chemicals to clean jackets. Also, avoid leather preparations that contain alcohol. Avoid turpentine and mineral spirits as they can pull color. One of the important things to be kept in mind is that usage of mink oil or other animal fats will darken leather. Send your leather jackets to a professional cleaning specialist once in a year. Don’t forget to remove the plastic cleaning bag before you store your leather jacket for a longer period of time. While cleaning your leather jacket fill a bowl with cool water, adding in a few drops of mild soap. Swish the water and soap together by hand to make the water sudsy. Dip the cloth into the bowl. Try to get the whole rag wet if you’re cleaning a larger surface area on the jacket. Squeeze out excess water and soap from the rag. Rub the cloth vigorously against itself to work up suds starting from the collar portion of the jacket. Rinse it properly once you are done with it; use a dry cloth to remove excess water from all the areas. Now allow the leather to dry. Last but not the least apply some amount of olive oil for conditioning the leather jacket to restore its flexibility and natural oils lost during the cleansing process.
